At around 1:15 p.m. Christmas Day a woman called 911 saying she saw flames in her neighbors great room window on Wyckoff Ave. Fire, Police, and EMS units were dispatched to the scene to find a free burning fire in the great room of the house. The recently widowed woman and her children were all attending a Christmas day church service just miles away.
Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze in about 30 minutes, but the home sustained extensive water and fire damage, according to the chief.
Investigators believe the fire was caused by the Christmas tree lights, which were left on as the family attended services.
Units from company 4 fire house were the first on the scene and were shocked to determine that most of the members responding have all attended Mahwah Schools with one or many of the family members that lived in the home.
